Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival

Image
Dear Parents and Caregivers, As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, I am excited to share that the children have been learning about the various celebrations associated with this event.  We have explored traditional customs through the stories of “端午节” (Dragon Boat Festival), including the delightful sticky rice dumplings (粽子) and the thrilling dragon boat race (龙舟比赛).  The children particularly enjoyed playing with the dragon headbands they crafted themselves. To reinforce key vocabulary, the children have been sitting in the "dragon boat" and singing the song "划龙舟" (Row the Dragon Boat) together in class and small groups.  This week, we delved deeper into the festival's origins and created a fun experience by imitating a dragon boat race with tummy boards! It has truly been a highlight of our learning journey. Wishing you and your families a joyful and healthy Dragon Boat Festival! If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to m...

Making Art Happen: Artwork in Progress!

Image
Dear Monkey Class Families,  The Monkey Class  has been buzzing with creativity lately.  As we continue to immerse ourselves in the world of art and self-expression, it's been inspiring to witness the students' growing enthusiasm and developing talents. Many exciting projects are now well underway, and we eagerly anticipate sharing the results of their creativity with you soon. In visual arts , our students have been busy developing their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination . Our collaborative artwork, inspired by Piet Mondrian , is really taking shape. We began by tracing shapes, a great exercise for hand muscles. Then came the fun of using tape to define shapes before colouring them. We had a small issue with the chalk rubbing off, a good problem-solving opportunity! We adapted and switched to paint, which is now bringing our Mondrian-esque piece to life. We expect to finish this artwork soon and are excited to display it in our classroom. We've also been revis...

Exciting Updates from Our Classroom!

Image
Dear Parents and Caregivers, I am thrilled to share some wonderful updates from our classroom over the past few weeks!  As part of our unit on "How We Express Ourselves," we had the privilege of welcoming Fai Shi Fu, the puppetry master, who captivated our students with a mesmerising performance featuring string puppets. The children not only enjoyed the show but also learned about the rich history and theory behind the puppets' movements. Their engagement with the monkey's tricks was a joy to see, and many were eager to try their hand at moving the little lion puppets. Furthermore,  we began by exploring the vibrant world of colours. As we missed Week 1 Chinese Day, it would be great if children could go through the engaging story of "The Yellow Dot" (小黄点) via the learning slide. Children would learn about the three primary colours and patterns. Building on this foundation, we expanded our vocabulary with colour terms such as "green" (绿色), "o...

Expressing Ourselves Through The Arts!

Image
Dear Monkey Class Families,  Over the past few weeks, our classroom has been buzzing with creativity and exploration as we've delved into the theme of "How We Express Ourselves" through the wonderful world of art! It's been a joy to witness the children's unique perspectives and their growing confidence in sharing their thoughts and feelings. Observing and Expressing: An Introduction To Visual Art Early in our exploration, we spent time in circle time and small groups looking at a variety of paintings and sculptures. It was fascinating to hear their observations and how different artworks made them feel. We encouraged active listening and respectful sharing, celebrating the diverse opinions within our classroom – even when a child confidently declared they didn't connect with a particular piece! This open dialogue is so important in fostering critical thinking and self-expression. Hands-On Creativity: Bringing Art to Life Looking ahead, we're excited to bu...
