Creative Explorations Continue

Dear Monkey Class Families,

We've been incredibly busy in the classroom, and I can't believe we are already in June, the last month of the school year! We continue to explore a variety of exciting new activities and expand on familiar favourites. It's wonderful to see the children's creativity and engagement blossom. As you'll see, many of our projects are still very much works in progress as we nurture their development and focus on fine-tuning our own skills and observations.

How We Express Ourselves

Our current Unit of Inquiry, "How We Express Ourselves," has really come alive through a rich exploration of the arts! The children have been enthusiastically engaging with different forms of expression, and it's been a joy to witness their growing creativity.

We've been spending time on the stage with music exploration, encouraging the children to discover sounds and rhythms, as well as allowing them the opportunity to explore their own interests and make music together. Some of the children love to sing and dance while requesting a variety of different music to be played. Others prefer to make their own music using instruments and follow a rhythm or beat. These initial forays into performance are very much an ongoing process as we build their confidence and understanding of musical concepts. Puppet shows continue to be a huge hit, both during our Monkey class time and open play, allowing imaginations to soar as they create stories and characters.

Collaborative spirit is high with our cardboard sculptures and group work! It's wonderful to see the children working together on larger pieces. These are truly works in progress as they first agree on a creation before collaborating to construct it. As they build, they're constantly figuring out new ways to bring their sculptures to life, from selecting colors and painting to adding their final touches.

We've also been diving into artistic concepts with Mati & Dada! This is a fun show the children can watch on YouTube where these characters go on adventures to meet different artists. Through their journeys, the children learn about various art styles and the cool techniques artists use in a really engaging, kid-friendly way. It's been a true journey of discovery for all of us, sparking some fascinating discussions and creative projects! For instance, the children loved when we explored RenĂ© Magritte, and they even spotted elements of his artwork, "The Son of Man," in our classroom! The student version of "Son of Man" has been a huge success, and we can't wait for you to see the final version at the upcoming K1 Celebration of Learning

The children have also having a fantastic time exploring with clay and pottery wheels. They're discovering new textures and shapes, and it's wonderful to see their fine motor skills developing. Many of these clay creations are still in their initial stages as they experiment with different forms and techniques, and the focus is more on the exploration than on having an end product. We've also been extending our understanding of patterns to music, specifically through body percussion.

Other skills we continue to explore include connecting our understanding of patterns and how this relates to rhythm and movement. Gross Motor Development is something we have continued to develop every Thursday; despite the weather, we have found ways to incorporate this into the classroom when we can't go outdoors. We also continue to explore number concepts through numerous activities and a number of year-long outcomes through both play and small group activities.
